If the future of quality journalism is on your mind, then you won't want to miss the Spring 2017 meeting of the Digital
Editors’ Network meeting on June 20th.
Hosted by Twitter's Rob Owers at its London offices in Soho and co-sponsored by the editorial software firm Desk-Net, the meeting will focus on how quality journalism can overcome two of its biggest
challenges – the corrosive impact of misinformation, and the
continuing search for sustainable business models.
Along with Twitter's Global Head of News Peter Greenberger, speakers from Twitter, Facebook, the BBC, Trinity Mirror, Full Fact, the Conversation, the London School of Economics and Political Science, and University of
Central Lancashire will lead the discussions that will kick off at 3pm and conclude at 7pm with a networking reception.
Confirmed speakers are:
- Peter Greenberger, Global Head of News at Twitter
- Aine Kerr, Head of Journalism Partnership at Facebook
- Charlie Beckett, Professor & Founding Director of LSE POLIS
- Ian Murray, Deputy Executive Director, Society of Editors
- Mukul Devichand, Editor of BBC World Hacks
- Phoebe Arnold, Head of Communications and Impact, Full Fact
- Emily Brown, Cities Editor at the Conversation
- David Higgerson, Digital Publishing Director at Trinity Mirror Regionals

Digital Editors’ Network co-founder François Nel, said: “Our event will
focus on the future of quality journalism and by that we don’t just mean the
high-brow or ‘broadsheet’ publishers. Any publisher reporting on the
powers-that-be knows that that we face serious challenges from every direction.
"Misinformation, lies and hoaxes are posing a serious threat to its credibility and the way journalism is distributed and consumed online makes the search for a viable business model as challenging as ever.
"Misinformation, lies and hoaxes are posing a serious threat to its credibility and the way journalism is distributed and consumed online makes the search for a viable business model as challenging as ever.
“Add to this the problems publishers face in getting access to
information from the police, local government and other local bodies and you
have something of a perfect storm.
“Hopefully the Network will provide some grounds for optimism and some
examples of how these problems are being overcome.
“And as we will be meeting just a couple of weeks after the general
election I am sure everyone attendees will have plenty of experiences to
share,” he added.
A spokesperson
for Twitter states: “Twitter's open and transparent nature is a powerful tool
for calling out misinformation and rebutting inaccuracies - for both reporters
and the wider public. As such, we're delighted to host the event at the
company's offices in the capital and to discuss these significant industry-wide
issues.”
The Digital Editors’ Network brings together
online media managers from all sectors of the industry to discuss best
practices and discuss industry trends. It was founded in 2007 by
François Nel and Nick Turner who have been joined by Lucia Adams in
organising the twice-yearly events. To stay in the loop, follow us on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn or add your contact details to our mailing list.
If you'd like to contribute ideas, speak, host, sponsor or collaborate on a future DEN meetup or workshop, contact the conveners François Nel at FPNel@uclan.ac.uk, Nick Turner at nickincumbria@gmail.com and Lucia Adams at me@luciaadams.co.uk
