Dates to diarise in the Autumn 2015 - and ways to get involved with DEN

Those who joined in the Spring 2015 Digital Editors Network meetup at the Wall Street Journal know it will be a hard act to follow. But the DEN convenors have been working at it. And while we can't yet announce the hosts (details, details), we can confirm that we'll be meeting on November 12th 19th in London. Please book the date. DEN is a community, not a membership association or an events company. So, we welcome (and rely on) contributors. Be in touch if you'd like help by speaking, sponsoring, hosting or helping with arrangements. Our email is digitaleditorsnetwork @ gmail.com. Also on our minds and in our autumn calendar are: Community and Hyperlocal Event on 9th September 2015 in Cardiff. The School of Journalism’s Centre for Community Journalism (C4CJ), in collaboration with the UK’s innovation foundation Nesta , will hold a one-day event about community and hyperlocal media before the bi-annual Future of Journalism academic conference kicks off. The o...

Wall Street Journal set to host DEN's Spring 2015 meetup in London on new formats for news

The next Digital Editors Network meeting on June 9th will look at new digital platforms for news - but will also explore how innovative media organisations are grappling with and rethinking the news experiences they create there. Which new formats work best now? What are innovators planning for next?  Hosting the discussion is just such a forward thinker’: John Crowley , The Wall Street Journal’s Digital Editor for Europe, Middle East and Africa. Speakers at the meeting on the 17th floor of News Corporation’s UK headquarters at London Bridge will include the BBC World Service's mobile Apps editor Trushar Barot on why his WhatsApp experiment convinced management to develop a formal instant-messaging news strategy; Tom Phillips on what new formats work for Buzzfeed and what ’type' of coders they are looking to hire to build them; why Edward Miller of Immersiv.ly believes that the end of Google Glass is just the start of virtual reality; and how Quartz engages audiences with...

#fearlessDEN Delivering bold innovations is on the agenda for the Autumn 2014 meetup to be hosted by Trinity Mirror

At the next Digital Editors Network meetup on November 6th we’re asking innovators not only to show us things that will inspire, but also to share how they overcame the obstacles to make it happen - and how they boldly keep going on. We're pleased to announce our host is one such fearless innovator: Trinity Mirror Regionals’ digital innovation editor Alison Gow . Alison Gow of Trinity Mirror “Back in 2008 we hosted a DEN in our Liverpool Echo offices; since then the network has grown considerably and so it's great to be able to offer a new invitation, this time to our Canary Wharf headquarters,” said Alison, who at the start of the year swapped the editor's chair at the Daily Post Wales, where Trinity Mirror piloted their Newsroom 3.0 concept, for the job of helping to deliver editorial innovation across all the titles in the UK’s largest publishers of regional newspapers.  That’s no small challenge.  “We've been accelerating the pace of change in Trinity ...

#visualDEN: If making, managing and monetizing visual content is on your agenda, register now for the next DEN meetup on 5 June at FT - now also with interactive hookup to JoziHub

[Update 19/05/2014: Reserve your space at the interactive hookup to JoziHub , South Africa, HERE from 20/05/2014] Visual content is top of mind in newsrooms and boardrooms. And it's also on the agenda for next Digital Editors Network meetup hosted by the Financial Times on 5 June 2014, with a live, interactive hookup to Johannesburg. So, who is doing good things? Who is doing it best? What do we need to know? And what do we need to avoid at all costs?  "The often-repeated claim that visuals are processed 60,000 times faster by the brain than text is probably bollocks ," says DEN co-founder  François Nel . "But there's no doubt visuals are critical to effective communication. As we struggle to navigate a world awash 24/7 with waves of information, perhaps it has never been more important that today." Lisa MacLeod  And if visual media are important to users, its also darn important to those in the business of making media, sai...
